POD tutorial on furniture concept

During this tutorial we were required to present and showed our furniture concept to Ms.Lisa, we showed her our finalized concept and explain the uses of materials and how it look. After that, Ms.Lisa offered us more option and advice to improve our design, she also offers ideas to cover up for our furniture if       we somehow end up unable to produced what we desire based on our concept. Ms.Lisa also advice us to do some research on the furniture's design category, materials' quality, pattern composition and rationale. We have already come up with the rationale of the furniture and that rational would be to provide relaxation and convenience for the buyer, and our concept focus primary on working class people in the age of 25 to 50. We also target environmentally conscious individuals as our furniture materials are based on the concept of recycling, environment friendly and 'Go green'.

This is our finalized furniture concept :

Group discussion for POD furniture concept

Today, before POD tutorial we had 3 hours of break, so our group decide to once again gather and discuss the furniture concept before presenting it to Ms.Lisa during the tutorial. We gather at the student life center and begin to revise the older design that everyone come up with. One of our member Lee Chia even made a small scale model of her concept. We pick and choose out the more good looking ones and tried combining it or add something to it. Here are some pics of the furniture concept :

And here are some pic we found in the net during our discussion that we took ideas from :

2nd lesson on POD

Today we were given the task to take photos of a certain theme using our black mounting board frame and capture it within the frame range. This assignment aimed to improve our theme focusing ability and framing skills, these 2 skills help us to place our design properly in the image and balance it out and making feel good to look at it. We were given 1 and a half hour to go around campus to capture object based on the theme we have slected. Among the picture we have to narrow it down to 20 of them, after that we will need to add another 30 picture from other place with the same theme to make short film using any media software we desire, and we will need to give that film a name based on theme we have selected. Sadly most of the pictures I took in the campus are not specific enough to show my theme, so I have to recapture 50 picture from different places and different object, but now I have learned how to be specific and properly place my object (well a lil bit better) to make it look nicer and less sophisticated.

1st group work, create your own furniture!

This is the 1st group assignment given to us for the Principle of Design, we had to do discussion, mind mapping and brain storming of ideas before getting start on our furniture. We 1st had to decide what furniture what we are going to make, and we were given some time to do the discussion before making a unofficial presentation on our furniture concept, the materials we will be using and the function of it.The idea and concept we present doesn't have to be our final decision. We were given 3 weeks of time to make this furniture. However we have to finalize and present our furniture concept and present it on 28 of August.

Me and my group decide that each group member come up with the concept art of their desire furniture, after that we will compare, choose and combine the different ideas of our group member and finalize it to present it on 28 August.

For my furniture concept, I decided that it will be a TV table, the possible materials I would use to build it would be newspaper rolls, thick cardboard, cellophane tape, CD stacks, and maybe wood planks and nails if we can find any. The design would be that of usual TV table with built in lower shelf to place the DVD player (etc.) and there would also be a remote control placer at the side of this furniture. The colour theme this furniture would be black which i think would make a bit classy, and the rationale of this concept is convenience, majority of the family always misplaced their TV remote after watching TV, and to make it convenient for them we make remote control placer for this purpose. And there is also a lower shelf for them to plac etheir DVD player which is quite convenient because they don't have to buy another shelf just to place their DVD player.

Self portrait for POD

After the lectures, Ms.Lisa requested us to do a self portraits as an assignment using different materials and style to introduce our self to her and the class. Our self portarits must at least consist of 2 methods of art, and we are encouraged to use things that are free and also the elements of nature as the theme of our portraits. During our search for materials, most of them picked flowers and grass for materials, and I even saw some of them trying to get the goose's feather from our campus luck but to no avail.

When I searched for my materials, I did not picked any of the flowers or grass, because during the lecture, Ms.Lisa mentioned that each designer is unique and have thier own style, I wanted to used the grass and flowers but when I saw every1 doing it I deicded to use something else. Then a sudden thirstiness come over me and the sun was shinning hot and bright, this gives me and idea to use the sand; its is part of nature's element and I didn't saw anyone using it, so i decide to give it a try by using paper cutting method and glu method fro my self portraits, however the results was not very pleasing though, because i have to get my hands dirty and the sand i collected was not what i had in mind, it has too many small rocks and when i tried to glued them they felled off.

The sand did not have the texture i was looking for and my paper cutting skills is horrible, I wanted to try different things but it didn't went exactly as planned. It was a bit disappointing since it did not really convey my message and it wasn't able to express my style, but I can't blame the art piece though, it is the designer's fault if the art piece does not reach our expectation, but since this is my 1st try on paper cutting and using sand as my art materials I guess its normal for me to not reach the expectations since I did not practice or receive any art lessons before i coming to Foundation in design and today was the 1st art lesson we receive before POD.

We were given the chance to redo another piece of our self portraits, but i decide not to do it because I want to use this art piece as a reminder for me to practice and polish my skills further in order to become a better disigner.

1st lesson on POD

Today was the 1st lesson on principle of design, during our class, Ms.Lisa explained and brief us about the details of principle of design which consist of the shapes, style, colours, fonts, and balance that should be considered when doing a design. By using different examples of the above, we could express and covey message, feelings, or concept of our design depending on the shapes, colour, style, and fonts. Ms.Lisa said it is also important for a designer to balance out their creation with positive and negative zones, however she personally thinks that the negative zones is more powerful for making a design that can attract people's attention.
